3D Scanning Case Study: S-Series Valtra Forestry Guarding
VALTRA S-Series Guard Kit
As the largest VALTRA chassis we’ve worked with to date and a completely new model in the Valtra range, the S-Series presented a new and unique challenge for our Botex Machinery Forestry Guarding. The VALTRA S396 was the prefect proving ground for the 3DSUK scanning service.
With no existing guarding kit design for an S-Series, a full 3D scan provided our design team with micron-accurate, reliable dimensions from the outset. Allowing for the development of a not only well-fitted, but ergonomic, tough and visually integrated guarding kit design. Even around a larger, complex VALTRA model.
By enabling full visualisation of the tractor from multiple unique angles, the 3D Scan streamlined the entire design and production process. It removed the risk of human measurement error and minimised trial-and-error during development, particularly valuable when working on a new and unfamiliar chassis.
The S-Series came equipped with some impressively sized wheels & tyres, with adjustable wheel positions, making accurate clearance measurements critical. Separate 3D scans of both the tractor and it’s wheels boosted confidence that the final design solution would not result in fitment issues.
An additional benefit of using 3D scanning became clear mid-project, when the customer requested extra guarding during the design phase. Traditionally this would have required additional manual muasurement time, instead, our design team simply requested additional reference geometry from the existing scan. We hopped on our scanning software and delivered the aditonal information, without interrupting fabrication, keeping the project on schedule and the design team focussed on design.
